of Plato, physics and astronomy were included as parts of philosophy, whereas now they constitute separate sciences. This, however, is not an insurmountable difficulty. What chiefly militates against the effort to frame a definition is that the precise content of philosophy is differently viewed by different schools of thought. Thus a definition of {2} philosophy which a follower of Herbert Spencer might frame would be unacceptable to an Hegelian, and the Hegelian definition would be rejected by the Spencerian. If we were to include in our definition some such phrase as "the knowledge of the Absolute," while this might suit some philosophers, others would deny that there is any Absolute at all. Another school would say that there may be an Absolute, but that it is unknowable, so that philosophy cannot be the knowledge of it. Yet another school would tell us that, whether there is or is not an Absolute, whether it is or is not knowable, the knowledge of it is in any case useless, and ought not to be sought. H

Based on lectures delivered ca. 1920, this critical history of Greek philosophy was very good, and promoted a good and basic understanding of the beginnings of philosophy, and it would seem that Greek philosophy is the beginning of all subsequent philosophy. I enjoyed reading this book and gained a lot of knowledge from it about philosophy, especially taking into consideration that my area is history and literature.Product details

I picked this up at my college library and found it to be the most wonderful find in a very long time. Stace explains and illustrates (figuratively) with such clear brilliance and eloquence. I am very surprised and sad to see it out of print, but it is available for free on some websites in PDF formats and otherwise. All though the reading was a bit more enjoyable holding an older yellowing book.
If you have a chance and are wanting to learn the Greek philosophers, this is the best place to start!
It is a little tough if you haven't had ANY philosophy before, but as a sophomore Philosophy majour it was definitely not too difficult, but again I must stress amazing!

Everything you ever wanted to know about Greek philosophy written in a clear and compelling way by one of the 20th century's most important philosophers. I'm glad that this text has been reissued in this attractive format, because my old hardcover version was falling apart. I find myself constantly referring back to this text whenever I need to check on some issue related to an ancient philosopher or ancient philosophical school. Quite simply, a philosophical classic.
Very interesting reading in an area that was sadly neglected in my educational experience. It's a pity I took the free copy - it lacks a table of contents but it's short enough to search by page as necessary.
