Miss Jane Grantley, dubbed the "Ice Witch" for her cool green gaze that intimidated all but the most calculating of suitors, feared no man and scoffed at the many scheming designs on her virtue, swearing never to marry for any reason but love.

The Heart Companion edition by Holly Newman Romance eBooks

I was not particularly thrilled with "The Heart's Companion." In fact, by page 70 I was still debating whether or not to finish it. Hurt in love, the steps Jane has taken to protect her heart have earned her the nickname, the "Ice Witch." Not very original or even very accurate. She and her companion spinster aunt are currently overseeing the household of a relative, along with their two young nephews. The Earl of Royce, a neighbor, returns from abroad and he and Jane meet. He is a good 10-12 years older than Jane. The age difference was popular in romance novels in the 80s; not so much now. Royce also has a nickname, "the Devil's Disciple," and many rumors have been spread about him.
The tone of this book is very formal. The first few pages, especially, read a bit like "Pride and Prejudice," which is not my cup of tea. It gets a bit better later on, but not much.
Throughout the book, there is a lot of preaching about not paying attention to "idle gossip." This becomes quite bothersome as Jane begins to ignore advice and warnings simply because the words were overheard, rather than spoken directly to someone. Royce is not much better. We are to believe he enjoys the company of children (he spends a lot of time taking the nephews out riding), yet the first time he meets them he lectures the boys (ages 5 and 8) about the importance of maintaining their good name. Not really the kind of conversation any young boys I am familiar with would consider interesting, but then these boys seem hard up for male companionship other than servants.
(Spoiler alert) Early in the book, Jane tumbles down a hill and must take to her bed. Through most of the book she is very weak spirited and "miss-ish." So the fact that she acts boldly at the end to save herself from a perilous situation is completely unbelievable. Also, although Aunt Sabrina is believable as a spoiled, manipulative witch, the "plot twist" at the end is not well supported by her previous actions.
Overall, I would recommend finding a different book to read.

The Heart Companion edition by Holly Newman Romance eBooks Reviews

This entertaining tale of lost reputation and the downside of lascivious gossip brings a delighted smile to the reader as we follow the lively life of a beautiful, wealthy young woman who is unduly influenced by stories she has heard of some new acquaintances. As she sorts through her inner battle to meld what she's heard with what she experiences herself, we all learn that life isn't always what we are lead to believe by untrustworthy sources. A balanced and patient attitude (and an ability to hold back judgement until proof can be exposed) can lead to a future of trust and happiness. I enjoyed the story and cautionary advice don't believe everything you hear.
The Heart's Companion - PG
Violence a kidnapping, attempted murder, death by fire
Language <10 swears
Sex no sex, a couple of kisses

I really enjoyed this book - thanks for letting me know about it, BookBub! I've read a couple reviews that compare this to Georgette Heyer's writing style. I agree somewhat--to me it's more like Heyer with sass and a couple of kisses. I'll be looking for more from this author.
I'm a little embarrassed to admit it took me almost two years to read this book after I bought it. I know we are not to judge a book by its cover, but the cover for this book just rather "turned me off'. The picture made the book look like the old Gothic romances I read years ago. I must have bought the book from the description because I certainly wouldn't have bought it for the cover. I am very glad to say the book was a very good read. I had just finished a four book series by a different author and I was so disgusted with the disturbing plots I almost wanted to delete all the Regency romance books from my kindle and find a different genre. This story was very well written and hopeful so that even though there were dastardly plots in the making there was not undue anxiety. Since the main characters suspected there was evil plots being formed which gave them a chance to be forewarned so the story never became maudlin. There was a little excitement towards the end but it wasn't heavily drawn out so it did not overwhelm the story. All in all a very pleasant read.
The book is well written, well edited, entertaining, and a clean romance (no sex scenes). All my favorite things in a Regency romance.
For me it is not a five star story because I did not feel drawn into the story, but rather felt like a visitor watching from afar; the story was interesting but not compelling.
It is an amusing pastiche of scenes from various books by Georgette Heyer. The blackberry scene in Chapter 2 is straight out of Heyer's "Venetia." There are other scenes and conversations from other Heyer books, including Frederica. Incidentally, this review is written while I am still on chapter 6. I am now amusing myself with seeing how many other conversations and/or scenes are lifted altogether too closely from Heyer novels.
For about three-fourths of this novel I was merely bored and annoyed. The author's knowledge of Regency England appears limited to whatever novels she may have read -- for example, this book begins with a ripoff of Georgette Heyer's "Venetia," but quickly veers off into the third- or fourth-rate. Unlike Heyer, Ms. Newman does not understand the difference between "principal" and "principle," "eminent" and "imminent," and "lie" and "lay," among oter elementary mistakes -- or perhaps she was so bored with her own work she never bothered to proofread it.

The heroine alternates between foolishness and stupidity, determinedly ignoring both common sense and outright warnings. Then at the 78 percent mark, an incident occurs that is so wildly moronic I gave up in disgust. If allowed NEGATIVE starring, this novel would definitely qualify. Don't waste your time. If this novel had not been free, I would be getting my money back.
